D3/D3B/D3C and 931 STEERING CLUTCHES
The D3 and D3B and D3C models were originally
dry type steering clutches and changed to the oil steering clutches later in their series. The Dry Clutch D3 79U series and the D3B 23Y, along with the 931 78U and 931B track loaders series used composite friction discs, qty (7) 8E4075 (earlier part numbers of 6Y4912 or 6S3183) per clutch and qty (6) steel separator plates (2H6936) per steering clutch. You will almost always have to replace the fiber discs, but the steel plates are usually reusable. If the steel plates are damaged, by scoring, warping, or just plain old wear they should be replaced. (Oil Type Clutch parts can be found below the Dry Type Clutch parts info) Occasionally we get calls regarding
"complete" steering clutch kits. The term, "Complete Kit", is
misleading because it implies that the parts supplier knows what you need for your clutch.
They don't!! (And...not all"Kits" being offered by different parts suppliers are

NEW After a few years producing and
providing the standard fiber disc, we have now produced a steel based friction disc to
strengthen your clutch and improve its potential for long term reliability. Similar
to the bimetallic disc, the center steel plate is sandwiched between two fiber wear
surfaces. Anticipating a higher volume of demand, we have been able to keep the cost
very close to the earlier style fiber disc.
$19.00 The increased cost
for these heavier duty discs is $49.00 per clutch (A small price to pay for
teeth that will not break off!) EVEN NEWER!! We
are now introducing bronze bimetallic friction discs that we anticipate will be the new
standard for the D3-D3b 931-931B dry type steering clutches. Besides having the
steel tooth center base, of course, the friction surfaces have been upgraded to the bronze
alloy friction material. Besides increased longevity of wear, they will have less
bonding possibility due to moisture and not working the machine. The bronze material
will also allow the owners to wash out their compartments without hurting the discs.
There is also an added bonus of increased coefficient of friction by 3% over the
earlier composite fiber discs and paper faced frictions 29.00 ea

style of steering clutches used different discs and different quantities. One
complete steering clutch used Qty 9 friction discs 6Y7914 (Earlier P/n's 5K8617 or 3A2858
were replaced by the 6Y7914) and Qty 9 Steel discs P/n 5K8616. There was also a
special plate, P/n 5V0593, a little thicker than the normal friction disc, and one per
clutch was used. (earlier P/n's replaced by the 5V0593 were 4K1333, 9K5484, and
