Because the 050440 or 70050440 steering
clutch throw-out bearings were getting s-o-o-o-o expensive, and because pulling and
re-installing these steering clutches a second time is rarely a fun project, we bought a
volume of these bearings so you would not have to cut corners. Now, at $45.00 ea,
you do not have to re-use marginal or questionable bearings.

you stand them all up next to each other, look for those that are shorter than they should
be (1/8" shorter is a good guideline) and you should consider replacing them.

The following manuals are only
guidelines. Watch your serial numbers closely and when you think you have the
correct information, CHECK AGAIN!!! Allis Chalmers
made some confusing model designations. In the beginning AC made an HD6 and the
standard model, standard gauge, was called HD6B. Do not confuse this HD6B with the
later model HD6B! They are entirely different machines in almost all circumstances.
SEARCHING FOR PARTS!?
When searching for parts, the part
numbers are, of course, very important. It is GOOD TO KNOW
that the part numbers in your parts manuals are probably NOT
the part numbers that you want to search for!!! If you have a manual showing 6 digit part
numbers, and the early machines and their parts manuals mostly show 6 digit numbers, and
you want to replace a bearing or seal for example, your local bearing and seal house will
not be able to help you if you give them that 6 digit number! For most of the
early construction equipment and loaders you will want to add a "70" in
front of the 6 digit number to make an 8 digit number. Depending on product line,
you may have to add a "73" in front of the 6 digit number. If you give
your local bearing and seal house the 8 digit part number they will be able to help you!
(or if you are doing a Google search) As with most rules, there are always
exceptions but your odds of finding the part that you need greatly increase if you do
follow this rule. "Use
an 8 digit part number by adding a "70" or "73" to your 6 digit
number."
You do not know what may have been done to your
machine in previous repairs over the decades. Even the manuals are not always
accurate so verify with casting numbers and compare them to part numbers that you find.
